After seven consecutive years without winning any silverware, Civil Service United have attributed the trophy drought to bad luck.
Civil General Secretary Ronald Chiwaula made the remarks during a press briefing he addressed with Coach Franco Ndawa at Civo Stadium in Lilongwe Thursday.
“This does not mean that we are happy with the status quo. Far from it! But sometimes such things go with bad luck,” Chiwaula said.
However, Chiwaula said he believes there will be a change of fortunes this season.
He said although the club has failed to win silverware in seven years, there have been some positives.
“Our players have managed to attract interest from foreign clubs. We are also able to contribute players to our national teams,” Chiwaula said.
The last silverware that Civil won was the defunct Standard Bank Cup in 2015 which came following their 1-0 win over Mighty Mukuru Wanderers.
Since then, the club went on to reach its lowest ebb with relegation in 2016.
However, the Civil Servants remained in the top flight league through the back door after buying Epac’s status.
Ndawa said Civil have failed to match other top teams such as Nyasa Big Bullets, Silver Strikers and Wanderers as they keep losing their stars.
“From 2015, we have been building a team every season. If we maintain the team for two or more seasons, we can win trophies and fight for the league title,” he said.
Ndawa gave examples of players such as Nelson Kangunje, Rightous Banda, John Lanjesi, Emmanuel Zoya, Raphael Phiri, Lawrence Chaziya and Jabulani Linje who left the team for greener pastures elsewhere.
Previously, Civil used to nurture talent and produce quality players.
However, the club has turned into a dumping site in recent years with rejects from other clubs trying to revive their careers there.
Civil are currently in the FDH Bank Cup round-of-16 but will not take part in the Airtel Top 8 Cup after finishing the first round of the Super League on position 10 with 17 points.
