Mzuzu Stadium will not host any event to pave the way for works after Mzuzu City Council closed the facility for renovations ahead of the next TNM Super League season expected to start next month.
The development comes barely three days after part of the stadium’s fence collapsed.
Newly elected Mzuzu City Mayor Councillor Gift Desire Nyirenda confirmed the development, saying they will concentrate on the pitch, which Football Association of Malawi officials condemned last season.
“It is a painful decision because people want to use the facility for different occasions like weddings, music shows and political rallies. Despite being a source of revenue to our council, we need to renovate it first to be ready for elite competitions by April,” he said.
Nyirenda declined to reveal the projected budget for the renovations but insisted they would do a thorough job.
“Our team will be on the ground working on the pitch through recommendations from the engineering department,” Nyirenda said.
Mzuzu City Council Director of Parks, Leisure and Environment Yotamu Mtafya said they were assessing the requirements; as such, they could not determine the actual amount required for the exercise.
“We have identified five walls to be renovated but we will inspect the whole fence so that we should renovate all weaker wall panels. The main challenge is that the fence was built long ago, it is old but we cannot demolish the whole of it because it will require a lot of money,” Mtafya said.
Recently, Moyale Barracks was forced to use Chitowe Stadium in Dwangwa, Nkhotakota District, as their home ground against Mighty Wanderers in the Airtel Top 8 Cup due to the poor condition of Mzuzu Stadium.
This is not the first time for the stadium wall to collapse, as it also fell in 2016 due to heavy rains.
The 15,000 facility was built in 1970.
