The race for the golden boot award in the Chinese Women’s Super League has reached an exciting stage with Tabitha Chawinga and her sister Temwa jointly leading the goal scorers’ chart.

Temwa and Tabitha are tied at the top with six goals each after the conclusion of the league’s first phase.

The two sisters, who play for defending champions Wuhan Jiangda, are just one goal above second-placed Brazilian Rafaelle of Changchun Dazhong Zhuoyue.

Tabitha said she was enjoying the battle against her sister. “It is interesting to be competing with my own sister. Temwa is a very good player and she has improved a lot. I am proud of her and she is yet to bring out the best,” she said.

Tabitha is hoping to reclaim the award she won for two consecutive years in China.

She achieved the feat after beating Nigerian striker Asisat Oshoala when she netted 17 goals in her debut season.

Last year’s golden boot award winner Barbra Banda of Shanghai Shengli, her teammate Yan Jin Jin and Li Ying of Shandong Ticai have scored four goals each.

Nigerian Ihezuo Chinwedu has scored three goals in the current campaign.

Temwa finished as the league’s second top goal-scorer with nine goals after helping Wuhan to win the title for the first time in 19 years.

She described the league as tough and competitive.

“This is my second season and it is my hope that Tabitha and I will successfully defend the title. But it is not easy as other players are also coming hard,” Temwa said.

The first phase of the league has produced five teams that will play in China’s national championship.

The teams are Wuhan, Shengli, Zhhouyue, Jiangsu and Guangzhou Meizhou Hakka.

Wuhan have 23 points from nine matches, at par with Shanghai.
