The inaugural Presidential Charity Golf tournament has realised over K270 million through donations and pledges.

The amount is K70 million more than the initial target of K200 million.

The tournament tees off at Lilongwe Golf Club Saturday, with the proceeds going towards supporting needy tertiary education institution students and survivors of tropical storms.

Organising committee spokesperson Thomas Chafunya said the event has received overwhelming response from the corporate world.

“The cause on which this initiative is built has motivated the corporate world and people of goodwill to make their contributions. The response is very impressive and we are very grateful to all those who have supported this noble cause,” Chafunya said.

He said at the event, President Lazarus Chakwera will play 18 holes with 123 other golfers.

“This tournament is a brainchild of His Excellency the President. His presence will not be that of guest of honour but host of honour as he is the one who invited those who are willing to change lives in our society. It’s about making a difference,” Chafunya said.

Amongst the invited guests are Chakwera’s vice Saulos Chilima, members of the diplomatic corps, private sector executives and philanthropists.

The tournament tees off at 9am on a shotgun start.

It will be played under a better ball stableford format, where the best score from a pair will be counted against others from the 60-plus teams.
