Mwakisulu, who is also the creator of Choices soapie, said the deal for the film, which was premiered last year in July and has also screened outside the country, means a lot for them, citing exposure.

“We are looking at it as a long term arrangement where benefits will not be seen straight away but rather interacting with such platforms on a continental scale is a big boost. Accelerate Plus TV is planning to penetrate the West African block in a big way. It is a private firm with very ambitious plans for the entertainment industry in Africa and beyond,” he said.

Mwakisulu said the contract runs from April 2022 to April 2024.

“It is a non-exclusive deal so, we can still talk to as many other platforms as we can,” he said.

Meanwhile, Mwakisulu has hailed Film Association of Malawi (Fama) for creating Movie Nights and also bringing Master Classes.

“This is long overdue. People need to embrace the culture of cinema once again. So, events like Movie Nights will help bring back this culture and also encourage filmmakers to do more. As for Master Classes, that is one way of interacting and sharing knowledge. It is actually an honour for me to help in facilitating the classes alongside Shemu Joyah and Eric Chan,” he said.

Fama Secretary General James Kitchen said yesterday Movie Nights and Master Classes were a sign of progress and that they were determined to develop the industry.

“We as Fama, are trying to create a platform for filmmakers in Malawi and at the same time empowering them to create good content,” Kitchen said.

In Blantyre, the Master Classes will take place at HBI Institute from May 2 20 with Mzuzu at Mzuzu University on May 19 to 20 and then Don Bosco in Lilongwe on May 30 to June 10. The other Master Classes will take place on July 18 to 20 (Zomba Central Telecentre), October 31 to November 11 (HBI Institute) and December 12 to 23 (Don Bosco).

Fama, in partnership with Jacaranda Cultural Centre in Blantyre, starts Movie Nights in Mandala tomorrow night with a film that trended recently for its ‘Mustafa Sindinamfuse’ clip – The Last Fishing Boat by Joyah.
