Ascent Soccer’s Lughano Nyondo, 18, continues to hog the limelight after she earned a $80,000 (about K136 million) scholarship with prestigious academic institution Northeastern University in Boston, Massachusetts, USA.
In a statement this week, Ascent said this is a full ride scholarship for Nyondo to continue her studies and play for Northeastern.
The K136 million annual scholarship will cover tuition, room and related costs.
Ascent founder George Maguire said Nyondo has emerged as one of the best attacking players on the East Coast of the United States and had attracted the interest of numerous other universities and colleges.
“Division I University Soccer is a proven pathway into the professional women’s game in the USA whilst offering players the chance to complete their education and develop athletically,” Maguire said.
Nyondo, originally from Mzuzu, joined Ascent Soccer as a 12-year-old before moving to the USA when she was 15 to attend middle and then high school on scholarships at Indian Mountain School and Brooks School, as facilitated by Malawi’s only full-time residential soccer academy based in Lilongwe.
Ascent Soccer Malawi has sent six players to the United States on scholarships— as part of their global scholars’ pathway— and they include Zebron Elias (Trinity College), Christian Kakhome, Edna Macuacua and Emmanuel Cheyo (Milton Academy) and Latumbikika Kayira.
The academy recruits talented young players from across Malawi and then invests heavily and holistically into their development, as players, students and people.
Four Ascent players, namely Rose Kabzere, Leticia Chinyamula, Faith Chinzimu and Maggie Chavula, were part of the Scorchers that won their maiden Cosafa Cup in South Africa following their 2-1 victory over Zambia.
Ascent’s Under-16 boys team also triumphed in Iceland in July, lifting the Rey Cup on their first tour of Europe.
