Five Malawian writers have contributed to the development of materials for the publication of Africa Study Bible by African Christian publishing company, Oasis International.
The writers who have contributed to the development of the new Bible include Reverend Felix Chingota of Blantyre Synod of Church of Central Africa Presbyterian, renowned radio and television personality Bayana Chunga, former general secretary of Students Christian Organisation in Malawi Patrick Kaudzu and Duncan Chiyani.
Speaking on Saturday on the sidelines of the Church Leaders Conference in Lilongwe, Scripture (SUM) Union of Malawi (SUM) National Director Amon Chanika said, unlike most study Bibles, which are written by westerners, the Africa Study Bible was uniquely created by Africans as a gift to their continent and to the global church.
Chanika disclosed that, with over 2, 600 notes created by more than 350 contributors from 50 countries, the Bible becomes the most ethnically and geographically diverse resource ever published.
“Africa Study Bible is made in such a way that the comments are relevant for Africa. This is the product of Oasis International and they have gone to many countries to look for people that know the situation about their own local environment,” Chanika said.
He said they have already done the shipment of the first consignment of the new Bible and that the booklets will avail themselves of shelves of selected bookshops in the next few days.
On his part, SUM National Chairperson Roosevelt Gondwe said Africa Study Bible offers a great opportunity to African believers to read the word of God systematically and understand it better.
Gondwe said, in the first phase, the union will supply each school with a free copy of the Bible.
“Depending on the feedback, we can think of attaching a cost to it,” he said.
Reverend Ling Kafukiza of Lingadzi Congregation of Zambezi Evangelical Church said his church would offer full support to the union in the distribution of the Bible.
Meanwhile, Oasis International has partnered SUM in the distribution of the biblical resource.
