Freestyles, energetic moves and creative routines coloured Ka Jive Dance competition season five auditions for the Southern Region on Saturday afternoon as the popular dance contest’s voyage to select the champion began.
Held at Times Entertainment Studios at Ginnery Corner in Blantyre, the competition, driven by Times Group through Times Television, underlined its Tivine Zimenezi signature when over 20 groups battled it out to earn a spot in the next round.
Beamed live on Times Television and hosted by Blak Jak and Miriam Ntambo, the studio turned sizzling and electric as the youthful groups dominated by males outclassed each other to win the hearts of the judges – Talumba Chirwa, Rina and Robert Magasa.
Having delayed to start, the event went all the way to the evening, with Magasa announcing the names of 15 groups that had made it to the next round and they included Future Kings and Robotronics.
It was all excitement for the 15 acts, which stormed the stage and danced to their success and for them; the road to the top has commenced.
Next up, the auditions go to Lilongwe this coming weekend where over 20 groups from the Central and Northern regions will also shrug it off for the 15 slots.
About 50 groups registered ahead of the auditions.
The three judges felt some groups offered the ‘wow’ factor during the auditions while some lacked energy and failed in a number of areas including transitions.
In their performances, the groups blended different sounds, both local and international, and some even went on to show the splendor of traditional dances.
Times Group Advertising Manager – Radio and Television Alfred Kanjere, said, despite delays, the auditions run perfectly and that they were now looking forward to the battle in Lilongwe.
“It’s been exciting and people are in for a treat. Young people from the Southern Region made a statement that there is talent in Malawi. We are looking forward to the same in Lilongwe,” Kanjere said.
The auditions were also given a classy start following support from Business Computer Systems which, on Friday, pumped over K2 million into the competition.
Youthful musician Waxy K spiced up the auditions.
