It was a joyous moment for several underprivileged students in Montserrado County electoral district 13 when they received 250,000 Liberian dollars from a political group under the banner Team Andy, as financial aid to continue their education.
Team Andy is a political group with offices in district 13, precisely Topor Village community. The group says it has been working in the district, providing services, including constructing of damaged bridges, renovation of schools, organizing quizzing tournaments, offering scholarships, and distributing food, non-food items to several communities.
Addressing both students and parents at the launch of phase one of the financial aid project held at the New Georgia United Methodist Church, the group’s Chairman, Henry G. Brumskine said, the initiative is in fulfillment of promises made to residents of the district few years back by Team Andy political leader, Mr. Andy B. Jallah, who currently resides in the United States.
“For us this isn’t a strange thing, since 2018 Team Andy came into existence our leader continues to his selflessness thereby fulfilling every single promise he made to the people of this district”, said Brumskine.
He said the first phase of the scheme is for four months after which phase two will focus on giving loans to market women across the district, adding that both projects have been budgeted for 1 million Liberian dollars.
He said Team Andy gained relevance in 2018 when young people of the district thought it prudent to have a young representation that will echo their voices and make better representation at the national legislature, something, he said prompted the youth to petition him to contest for a vacant seat at the time.
According to him, he later dropped his ambition after he lost his party primary to John J. Weah, and who also lost to current Representative Edward P. Flomo in the district’s by-election.
Brumskine said the launch of the financial aid is to buttress efforts of struggling parents, who are unable to meet the financial obligations of their children, and also to give underprivileged children hope that they can still acquire education despite the weak financial strength of their parents.
“We all are aware that national government can’t cater to all of its citizens, that’d why Team Andy through its political leaders and partners saw the need to embark on this journey of reaching out to underprivileged students across the district.”
Meanwhile, he disclosed that shortly the group will break in district13 to build the first ever District Administrative Hub that will host the district office, free digital library, and a hall with sitting capacity for 250, adding that the hall will also host the district radio and television stations and a modern pharmacy.
In response, a parent of one of the beneficiaries, who is a resident of Iron Factory community, Madam Veronica Tarpeh extolled the group for what she term as great relief to parents, noting that the financial aid was timely, and will ease parents’ burdens.
“I’m overwhelmed with this development for a political group to embark on this journey it means a lot to some of us, whose children are benefiting”.
She thanked the group through its political leader for making the finances available and fulfilling his promises to the people of electoral district 13, saying, “I’m sure the people of this district will consider you and especially, we the parents whose children have benefited.” By Lewis S. Teh
