The Deputy Director General for information and coordination at the Liberia Institute for Statistics and Geo-information Services (LISGIS) Wilmot Smith, says the Institute is ready to conduct the fifth national population and housing census for the country.
The pending census that runs from October 24 to November 7, 2022, is the first exercise that will involve digital technology after all previous censuses conducted here, he revealed. after the 1962, 1974, and 2008 censors and will be consulted from October 24 2022 to November 7, 2022.
Speaking at the Ministry of Information, Cultural Affairs and Tourism (MICAT) regular briefing on Thursday, September 15, 2022, in Monrovia, Director Smith stressed that the 5th National Population and Housing Census is a national propriety project for the Government of Liberia and it falls within the bailiwick of the United Nations 2020 round of censors, adding “this is a global framework that Liberians must uphold, defend, and implement.”
The pending census is being supported by partners, including UNFPA, WORLD BANK, the Governments of Sweden, Ireland, United States and the Government of Liberia.
Highlighting the state of preparedness for the exercise, he indicates LISGIS has trained 110 master trainers and that training for 592 trainers will take place from September 26th through October 5th, 2022 in six statistical regions.
He continues that training for 17,029 enumerators and supervisors will take place in mid-October 2022 at 148 training sites nationwide and that enumeration equipment (tablets) are at advanced stage of provision (8,000/ 13,800).
Mr. Smith further explains that logistics plans for equipping, deploying, mobilizing and monitoring 15 counties’ census officials, including 154 district census officers, 2,760 supervisors and 13,800 enumerators are being reviewed daily at LISGIS command and control centers.
Meanwhile, Director Smith notes that countdown is on with exactly 40 days to the census, calling on citizens and residents to open their homes to census enumerators from October 24th through November 7th, 2022.
Liberians go to presidential and general elections in 2023, and census is a key requirement after every 10 years to reset boundary demarcation and electoral districts for voting and development planning purposes.https://thenewdawnliberia.com/lisgis-decries-delay-over-new-census-date/ Editing by Jonathan Browne
