The Plenary of the House of Representatives has mandated its committees on Elections and Inauguration, and Ways, Means and Finance to review circumstances surrounding the postponement of the by-election in Lofa County by the National Elections Commission (NEC) and to announce a new date for the poll.

Plenary reached the decision Thursday, 19 May during the 23rd day sitting of the House following a communication from the NEC.

In its communication, NEC Chairperson Madam Davidetta Browne-Lansanah gave reasons behind the postponement of the 10 May Senatorial By-Election in Lofa County.

She outlined the current court case, Collaborating Political Parties (CPP) versus the All Liberian Political Party (ALP) and the Unity Party (UP), and need for additional funding to conduct the election as reasons for the postponement.

Following the reading and floor debate on the instrument, the Plenary mandated the relevant committees to review the communication and advise the august body within two weeks.

The by-election in Lofa is to fill a vacancy created by the criminal trial and conviction of Senator-elect Brownie J. Samukai and others, for misapplying soldiers’ benefits totaling over half a million United States Dollars under the administration of Ex-president Ellen Johnson Sirleaf.https://thenewdawnliberia.com/lofa-by-election-postponed-indefinitely/ Editing by Jonathan Browne
