BLANTYRE-(MaraviPost)-Member of Parliament (MP) for Phalombe North Constituency Malume Bokosi has appealed people nationwide not to vandalise boreholes fearing social and economic challenges people will face as a result of having non-functional boreholes in their areas.
Bokosi made the plea following a project which Pacific Limited has embarked on in Phalombe North of rehabilitating over 60 non-functional boreholes in the area.
Bokosi said; “it is sad that some ill-minded people are stealing boreholes equipment that have been drilled or rehabilitated. This is affecting a number of development activities in our areas as water is life.
“But now am happy that Pacific Limited with their vast experience they have started teaching us on how we can take care of the boreholes. And we will keep talking to the community leadership the need of everyone being in forefront to guard the boreholes. We have agreed that each and every one of us should take responsibility safeguarding the boreholes because this is a lifeline project we have never had before”.
According to Bokosi the project will improve challenges people used to face in searching for clean and safe water in his constituency.
“Accessibility of clean and safe water amongst people in the constituency will now be easy because of the project. Talking of the time people used in search of portable water will now be used on other developmental activities and the distance they travelled to find clean water will be reduced,” said Bokosi.
In an interview with one of the community members who is also Area Development Committee – ADC Chairperson, Handson Mambulasa said the project which Pacific Limited is carrying out in the constituency is timely.
Mambulasa said in the past the district has been recording more cases of waterborne diseases due to the use of water from unsafe sources.
Responding to a WhatsApp questionnaire, Pacific Limited founder Faizal Aboo said they are concerned with reports of people stealing borehole equipment in other constituencies.
“As Pacific, we are very concerned about vandalism of community boreholes. It is important that communities must do community policing to prevent future vandalism. I would like to push chiefs to create and put in place committees of at least 6 people in every area where there is a borehole who can learn how to fix boreholes, look after them and maintained a small fund for eventualities.
“We can proudly state that we have saved each household at least with one hour of day which compounds to adding a trillion hours of productivity to the GDP of this country and am sure that will definitely improve lives and income for all,” said Aboo.
According to Pacific Limited borehole rehabilitation leader in the southern region Abdul Majeed they are expected to repair over 60 non-functional boreholes in Phalombe.
The Limited company has now rehabilitated around 6, 000 broken boreholes across all regions over 40 constituencies.
