BLANTYRE-(MaraviPost)-On Friday September 30, 2022 the National Youth Network on Climate Change (NYNCC), an organization that fights against climate change held its first Regional Climate Justice Youth Forum in the Southern.
The regional forum was jointly organized with SOFET at Malawi University of Business and Applied Science (MUBAS) in Blantyre.
It was among the Network’s serious pre-COP activities towards COP27 in Egypt.
Its primary focus was to bring the voices of those marginalized and vulnerable groups in forefront especially those negatively impacted by climate change, share lived experience through storytelling ensuring inclusive gender story-telling advocacy example connecting SRHR to climate crisis, children’s rights and the environment with special focus on climate change and creative Advocacy, using Arts and Culture tools in Climate Justice Advocacy.
Speaking during the event, NYNCC Coordinator Dominique Amon Nyasulu challenged Malawian youths to be vigilant in holding leaders accountable to deliver on climate change fight commitments.
He further appealed for active youth participation towards the country’s Nationally Determined Contribution (NDCs).
Nyasulu also revealed that besides regional forums and other meetings on climate change, the organization is also planning to establish youth caravans, targeting those communities that are largely affected by climate change so that they give out their voices and stories.
“Besides our regional forums and other meetings, we are also planning to have youth caravans targeting communities that have largely affected by climate change.
“In this process, we want the youths from such communities to tell us stories how climate change is affecting them.
“We are going to document all the stories to COP27 through COP27 presidency,” said Nyasulu.
In his remarks, Dean of School of Science and Technology at MUBAS Mphatso Kamndaya thanked NYNCC for its projects in the fight against climate change in the country.
He expressed the university’s interest to partner with NYNCC in implementing some of its projects in the country, mainly in tertiary institutions.
“Actually, we want to sign a partnership with NYNCC and work together with them in areas of grant proposals, climate change researches and others,” said Kamndaya.
He disclosed that as a university, MUBAS is currently planning to develop a green house emersion that will be used in three sectors of the country’s economy such as energy, industrial process and waste management.
The regional forum was being held under the theme: “Towards an African People’s COP that Responds to Priorities of Children and Youth in Malawi” with support from Concern Worldwide Malawi office.
