LILONGWE-(MaraviPost)-The National Commission for Science and Technology (NCST) on Friday presented Open Forum on Agricultural Biotechnology (OFAB) inaugural media awards to journalists in print and radio, among other categories.

NCST, as the apex body in science technology and innovation in Malawi, hosts the Malawi chapter for OFAB, a multinational project promoting agricultural biotechnology.

Speaking during the media awards presentation ceremony in Lilongwe, NCST Acting Director of Planning, Kondwani Gondwe, said the awards seek to promote science journalism and excellence in science reporting.

“Journalists will be promoted to write stories that are contributive and inform the masses about what biotechnology is and its benefits.

“As the apex body we must be in the forefront in promoting biotechnology and its utilization in order to bridge the information gaps that exist among people,” Gondwe said.

In the print category, for instance, Imam Wali, a correspondent for Times Group, clinched the first prize and went away with a trophy and US$750.

Tamanda Matebule came second in this category, carting home a trophy and US$450.

In the radio category, George Kalungwe and Chikondi Mphande—both from Zodiak Broadcasting Station—won first and second prize, respectively.

Open Forum on Agricultural Biotechnology in Africa (OFAB) Project facilitates constructive conversations among key stakeholders and decision-makers on agricultural biotechnology.

For both policymakers and the larger public, OFAB facilitates quality engagements and conversations on the safety and benefits of modern biotechnology.

OFAB, a project of AATF, is funded by the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation and is being implemented in twelve African countries including, among others, Kenya, Uganda, Tanzania, Nigeria, Ghana, Burkina Faso, Ethiopia, Mozambique, Malawi and Rwanda.
