THYOLO-(MANA)-Communities and businesses operators in Luchenza on Friday took time to clean streets in the Municipality as one way of fulfilling government clean up campaign which was launched two years ago.

People who joined clean up campaign include Council staff, Police South East region, Luchenza Police station, councilors, party representatives among others.

Speaking after conducting the cleaning exercise on Friday, Luchenza Municipality Chief Executive Officer Selina Chimphamba said her office is committed to ensure that the surrounding is clean all the time to safeguard people’s lives.

Chimphamba said the Manucipality continues to put waste bins in all strategic places in order to promote the culture of cleanliness in different places surrounding Manucipality and even beyond councillors Wards.

“Shortly we are establishing two road blocks to be manned by police and council so that while police are doing security issues, the Manucipality will be on alert to ensure that nobody is throwing wastes anywhere.

“We wrote corporates organisations like Standard bank, FDH and Non Ggovernmental Organisations to support in buying protective wear. We are also planning to embark on awareness and sensitization using Public Address system to safeguard cleanliness in our Manucipality,” said Chimphamba.

Henderson Spoon, Chairperson for Planning and Development at Luchenza Municipality who was part of the cleaning exercise said as a councilor it is always good to lead in each and every development activity.

He said, “It is my duty to teach my people how to make our town clean since we can also avoid cholera through this initiative. Community should also be on forefront when it comes to clean up days. This will promote health in businesses and homes.

President of Malawi Lazarus Chakwera announced an initiative to clean-up Malawi saying on the second Friday of every month Malawians in urban and rural areas are encouraged to go out and clean-up their local area.

President of Malawi, Lazarus Chakwera said, “A clean environment is part of the new Malawi we are building, and each of us has a responsibility to make that a reality.”
