KABUL-(MaraviPost)-At least 19 people have died and 27 others wounded following a suicide bomb that struck an education center in a Shiite area of the Afghan capital, Kabul on Friday.

The Taliban-appointed police spokesman, Khalid Zadran, confirmed the number of casualties in a statement.

“Students were preparing for an exam when a suicide bomber struck at this educational centre. Unfortunately, 19 people have been martyred and 27 others wounded,” said Zadran.

According to Zadran, the blast took place on Friday at the Kaaj education centre in the Dashti Barchi area where students had been writing their practice university exams.

The suicide bombing was the latest in a steady stream of violence since the Taliban seized power. No one immediately claimed responsibility for the attack, Reuters reported.

According to the Interior Ministry spokesman Abdul Nafi Takor, police have arrested a suspect who may have links to the attack.

The U.S. embassy in the country has strongly condemned the attack on the Kaaj Higher Educational Center. The embassy has described the attack as a shameful act adding that all students should be able to pursue an education in peace & without fear.

Since seizing power, the Taliban have banned most girls beyond the sixth grade from attending school. But female high school graduates from previous years can go to university.
