Afghanistan Earthquake claims 920 lives, scores wounded

KHOST– An earthquake is reported to have killed 920 people and left scores injured in Afghanistan. According to European Mediterranean Seismological, tremors were felt across more than 500 km of Afghanistan, Pakistan and India. Another strongest earthquake in Afghanistan happened on September 6,1950 in the region of Kabul.

KHOST-(MaraviPost)-An earthquake is reported to have killed 920 people and left scores injured in Afghanistan.

According to the United States Geological survey, the earthquake – which hit during the early hours of Wednesday, June 22, 2022 as many people slept had a magnitude of 6.1 quake at a depth of 51km.

The quake is said to have struck about 44km (27 miles) from the south-eastern city of Khost.

According to European Mediterranean Seismological, tremors were felt across more than 500km of Afghanistan, Pakistan and India.

Pictures shared on social media are showing people on stretchers, rubble and ruined homes in Paktika province of the country with a death toll of more than 920 and more than 600 others injured.

“Unfortunately, last night there was a severe earthquake in four districts of Paktika province, which killed and injured hundreds of our countrymen and destroyed dozens of houses,” government spokesman Bilal Karimi tweeted.

“We urge all aid agencies to send teams to the area immediately to prevent further catastrophe,” Karimi added.

Another strongest earthquake in Afghanistan happened on September 6,1950 in the region of Kabul.

The quake had a magnitude of 7.6 on the Richter scale and killed thousands of people in the country.
