PRETORIA, April 7 (ANA) – South African police in Limpopo province have arrested a second person believed to be involved in the violent attack and robbery which took place on February 14 at the house of a mayor in the Waterberg district.

The 34-year-old woman is expected to appear before the Phalala magistrate’s court on Friday, Limpopo police spokesman Colonel Moatshe Ngoepe said in a statement.

“Meanwhile, her accomplice Antonio Lucas Joao aged 31, who was arrested shortly after the incident while at his hideout in the Gauteng province, will appear on 15 April 2021 for formal bail application and for further police investigations,” said Ngoepe.

The arrests emanate from police investigations into an incident in which a group comprising four armed men and two women, driving in three vehicles, arrived at the gate of the unnamed Limpopo mayor’s house. They approached the security guard and asked to see the mayor.

Before the security guard could respond he was attacked and the assailants entered the house, tied up everyone inside and ransacked the premises, police said.

“Subsequently, they stole a Toyota Legend 45 and fled the scene but the car was later found abandoned along Lebu Road in the Tomburke policing area outside Lephalale. These suspects disappeared with a white Toyota Fortuner, a navy blue VW Polo and another unidentified car,” said Ngoepe.

The attacked security guard was taken to hospital with serious injuries.
