Western Cape MEC calls for information on shooters
Western Cape Community Safety MEC Albert Fritz wants names after 10 people were killed in separate shootings.
CAPE TOWN, March 31 (ANA) – The MEC for community safety in the Western Cape, Albert Fritz, has called for information on those responsible for the death of 10 people in separate incidents in Mfuleni.
In a statement released on Wednesday, Fritz condemned the shootings, which took place on Sunday and Monday, in the strongest terms possible and called on members of the community with information to immediately come forward and report anything they may know to the South African Police Service (SAPS).
The incidents included three people being shot dead by four suspects in Ligwa Street on Sunday afternoon, while a fourth victim was hospitalised. On Sunday evening, a 29-year-old was shot and killed in a tavern.
In Bosasa, also on Sunday evening, two men were shot and killed. One was found inside a vehicle, the other next to the vehicle.
Finally, a shooting believed to be a retaliation occurred in the Covid-19 informal settlement, during which four people were killed and three were injured.
“I call on any members of the community with information to immediately come forward and to report such to SAPS. We cannot allow our communities to be tormented and traumatised by dangerous criminals. These acts are akin to terrorism and we must not protect those who hold our communities at ransom,” Fritz said.
He said the provincial SAPS management had ordered for additional officers to be deployed to the area and forces were on patrol and executing operations at known hot spots.
Fritz said detectives were pursuing all possible leads.
