JOHANNESBURG, July 22 (ANA) – As Pitso Mosimane’s Al Ahly romped to victory in the African Champions League last week, it came as no surprise as the Egyptian Giants continued to thrive under the South African coach.

Al Ahly beat Kaizer Chiefs 3-0 in the final of the competition in Casablanca, Morocco, as Mosimane led the side to a second successive trophy in the premier African club football competition.

Mosimane had just taken over as coach of Al Ahly in 2020, when he first led them to victory in the Champions League.

Now aged 56, Mosimane began his coaching career as an assistant coach at SuperSport United before taking over the head position in 2001. He held the head coach position until 2007, winning SAA Super Eight Cup in 2004 and the Nedbank Cup in 2005.

He first began as assistant coach for the South Africa national team – Bafana Bafana in 2006 before being appointed as coach after the World Cup in 2010. He left Bafana in 2012 when he joined Mamelodi Sundowns as head coach.

It was there at ‘The Brazilians’ where Mosimane’s career would truly begin to flourish. He won the SA Premiership title five times between 2013 and 2020, while also winning the Nedbank Cup and Telkom Knockout twice each.

His crowning glory in charge of Sundowns would undoubtedly be their African Champions League title in 2016.

He was also named as the SA Premiership coach of the year on five occasions.

Finally, in September 2020, and having achieved everything on offer in SA club football he resigned as coach of Sundowns. A matter of days later, his move to Al Ahly was made official – and his stay in North Africa could be only just beginning. – African News Agency (ANA), Editing by Michael Sherman
