UJ ranked one of world’s top-performing universities

The University of Johannesburg has placed first in the world in the Decent Work and Economic Growth category and 92nd overall, according to the latest Times Higher Education Impact Rankings.

DURBAN, April 23 (ANA) – The University of Johannesburg (UJ) in the Gauteng province has been ranked as one of the top-performing universities in the world, according to the latest Times Higher Education (THE) Impact Rankings.

The rankings aim to recognise universities across the world for their social and economic impact based on the Sustainable Development Goals of the United Nations.

UJ was placed first in the world in the Decent Work and Economic Growth category, according to the results published on Wednesday.

This marked a significant improvement at UJ, given that it placed 48th in the same category the year before.

Overall, UJ was placed 92nd in the world out of the 1,150 universities that participated in the rankings.

UJ’s Vice-Chancellor and Principal Professor Tshilidzi Marwala attributed the success to a several factors.

Marwala said that the university remained committed to supporting the Sustainable Development Goals of the UN.

“The university has invested heavily in the teaching and learning domain to make it possible for our students and academic staff to excel in research and academic work. Through these impact rankings the university is demonstrating its work in tackling global issues, and these endeavours have not gone unnoticed.

“These results are received with great joy and celebration, as we continue to forge ahead with our mission to make UJ the university of choice, anchored in Africa and dynamically shaping the world,” Marwala said in a statement on Friday.

In addition to being placed first in the world for Decent Work and Economic Growth, UJ came fourth in the world in the No Poverty category.

It also placed 24th in the world for Quality Education, 43rd in the world for Gender Equality, 60th for Reduced Inequalities, 79th for Responsible Consumption and Production, and 91st for Affordable and Clean Energy.
