Two killed, seven injured in Durban horror crash

DURBAN, June 1 (ANA) – Two people died and seven others were seriously injured when a delivery vehicle lost control and overturned in Durban, KwaZulu-Natal on Monday night, police and emergency services said.

Teams from private ambulance services KZN VIP Medical and ALS Paramedics were the first respondents on the scene after the accident occurred at around 18:35pm on the N3 highway at the Brickfield Road off-ramp heading east.

“A light delivery vehicle with passengers on the back lost control on the N3 freeway before overturning multiple times and ejecting most of its passengers before coming to rest on its wheels,” ALS Paramedics said in a statement.

The driver of the delivery vehicle was found trapped with fatal injuries and declared dead on the scene.

Paramedics also could not save a female passenger in her twenties who was also trapped with critical injuries.

Seven other passengers sustained critical injuries and were stabilised on the scene before being transported to a nearby hospital.

“At this stage the events leading up to the accident are unknown (but police) were on the scene and will be investigating further,” ALS Paramedics said.

KwaZulu-Natal regional police spokesperson Captain Nqobile Gwala said a case of culpable homicide was being investigated.

“Two people were declared dead at the scene while others were rushed to hospital for medical attention. The circumstances surrounding the incident are being investigated,” Gwala said in a statement on Tuesday.
