CAPE TOWN, March 24 (ANA) – The South African State Theatre (SAST) has collaborated with the Baxter Theatre and Durban’s The Playhouse Company to host the 2021 edition of the dance festival, Kucheza Afrika Festival.

In a press statement on Tuesday, SAST says the collaboration will see the festival in three cities, Pretoria, Cape Town and Durban.

The collaboration was born out of a need to reignite the fires of live theatre, the statement said.

The festival is scheduled to take place from 1 to 11 April 2021.

Due to the Covid-19 pandemic and current national lockdown regulations, performances will be limited to 100 people.

At the State Theatre, dance lovers can anticipate live shows by acclaimed dancers and choreographers such as Vincent Mantsoe, Lulu Mlangeni, Ignatius van Heerden, Fana Tshabalala, Thulani Chauke, Mdu Nhlapo and more.

Capetonians can also look forward to the live performances by Louise Coetzer in collaboration with music artists Brydon Bolton and Matthijs van Dijk.

The Baxter Theatre will host two productions – Trapped by Unmute Dance Company and Louise Coetzer’s (Darkroom Contemporary) Memoryhouse.

Trapped challenges the ‘trapped mentality’ that society uses to stereotype persons living with a disability.

The SAST, in collaboration with The Playhouse Company, will stage the dance piece, Sullied, by Kristi-Leigh Gresse.

Using dance and spoken word, Sullied dives deep into the world of rape culture, sexuality, gender identity, race polarisation, and religion.

This year’s installment of Kucheza Afrika Festival will be a mixture of live performances and online presentations by international acts.

Booking is through Webtickets on 086 111 0005 and, online at www.webtickets.co.za or Pick n Pay stores.
