He said the teams executed a disruptive operation in Suikerbekkier Street, where they busted a couple with drugs at one of the premises.

The couple, aged 48 and 43, were arrested after a further search within the premises led officers to the discovery of methamphetamine and cannabis with an estimated street value of R29,000.

An undisclosed amount of cash was also confiscated by the officers.

In a separate incident in Mpumalanga, seven suspects appeared in the Bethal Magistrate’s Court on Tuesday on charges of dealing and possession of drugs.

The group was arrested by the Hawks’ Serious Organised Crime Investigation team, Forensic Science Laboratory, Crime Intelligence (CI), Tactical Response Team (TRT), Public Order Policing (POPS) and Bethal police during a clampdown which emanated from a major Hawks and CI investigation running since June 2020 to address the drug challenges in the Bethal area.

Information was gathered by the investigation teams about the suspects dealing in drugs around the Secunda and Bethal areas.

The case against the group has been postponed until Friday, July 2, for the appointment of a court interpreter.

Mpumalanga head of the Hawks Major-General Zodwa Mokoena commended the team and the members of the public for working together in the fight against drug abuse within the community.
