South African soccer player Anele Ngcongca killed in KZN car crash

Former Bafana Bafana and Mamelodi Sundowns defender, Anele Ngcongca, died in the early hours of Monday morning after he was involved in a motor vehicle accident in KwaZulu-Natal.

DURBAN, November 23 (ANA) – Former Bafana Bafana and Mamelodi Sundowns defender, Anele Ngcongca, died in the early hours of Monday morning after being involved in a vehicle accident in South Africa’s KwaZulu-Natal province, police said.

Ngcongca, 33, was pronounced dead by medical teams on the scene of the accident which occurred in Umlazi, just south of the Durban central business district.

“At 05:00 this morning, a vehicle with two occupants lost control and overturned on the N2 freeway near Mtunzini,“ police spokesman Brigadier Jay Naicker said.

“A 33-year-old man was declared dead at the scene. The driver sustained serious injuries and was taken to hospital for medical attention.“

Naicker said police had opened a case of culpable homicide for investigation.

Ngcongca, who spent numerous years playing soccer in Europe for the likes of Belgian professional football club Genk and French club Troyes, also achieved tremendous success as a player in South Africa, even playing for national team Bafana Bafana.

For the 2019/2020 season, Ngcongca and Mamelodi Sundowns scooped a triple crown by winning the Telkom knockout tournament, the Nedbank Cup and the PSL league.

During his stay at Genk, which spanned almost a decade, Ngcongca won the Belgian league and Belgian Cup.

Before his death, Ngcongca was about to join Durban-based Amazulu on a loan deal from his former club Mamelodi Sundowns.

Following news of the football star’s untimely death, tributes poured in via social media.
