CAPE TOWN, April 1 (ANA) – South Africa’s Directorate for Priority Crime Investigation (the Hawks) has arrested a 17th suspect in the gang-related 2017 murder of ‘steriod king’ Brian Wainstein.

In a statement on Thursday, Hawks spokeswoman Colonel Katlego Mogale said the 42-year-old man is believed to be a member of the 27s gang.

The suspect will join other co-accused including alleged underworld kingpin and leader of the Sexy Boys gang Jerome ‘Donkie’ Booysen, alleged underworld figure André Naude aged 51, another alleged underworld figure Mark Lifman, 51-year-old Samuel Phillip Fahquharson, Eagon Ansley Norman, aged 46, Jacobus Stevens who is 51 and 39-year-old police sergeant Wayne Henderson.

Another suspect and alleged leader of the 27s gang William “Red” Stevens has since been shot and killed near his home in Kraaifontein.

Wainstein was murdered at his Constantia home in Cape Town in August 2017 while asleep next to his child and spouse. Three men were sentenced in the case early in 2020, all alleged to be members of the 27s gang.

All remaining suspects are expected to appear in the Cape Town Magistrate’s Court on May 12.

Sources have previously claimed that Wainstein “chose” the wrong side in a gang war and was therefore “taken out“.

At the time of his murder, Wainstein was challenging his extradition to the United States where he was wanted for allegedly running a massive steroid racket.

The Hawks’s Mogale said the latest suspect in Wainstein’s killing was arrested by a multidisciplinary team led by the directorate’s serious organised crime investigation unit together with Crime Intelligence and other investigating teams based in Cape Town.

The arresting team was also supported by members of the South African Police Service’s visible policing unit.
