CAPE TOWN, April 28 (ANA) – Police in Cape Town arrested six suspects after receiving information from members of the community about gang members selling drugs in Delft.

In a statement released on Wednesday, provincial police spokesperson Captain FC van Wyk said members of the Western Cape Public Order Police (POP) were deployed to the area on Tuesday due to a surge in gang-related violence.

He said the officers received information stating drugs were being sold at three addresses in Elsenburg, Junker and Bergbessie streets.

Van Wyk said upon arrival at the address in Elsenburg Street officers searched the premises and two suspects were found to be in possession of drugs.

He said one suspect was found to be in possession of six units of methamphetamine. The other suspect, who tried evading police, was found to have eight units of methamphetamine in his possession.

The suspects, aged 27 and 36, were subsequently arrested and face charges of possession of drugs.

At the address in Junker Street, Van Wyk said officers proceeded to search the premises and found two suspects in possession of drugs.

He said one of the suspects attempted to flee but was quickly apprehended.

During the search of the suspects, officers found 10 mandrax tablets and 28 half mandrax tablets in one of the suspect’s pockets. A search of the second suspect led officers to confiscating 16 packets of methamphetamine in his possession.

Both suspects, aged 41 and 44, were arrested and face charges of possession of drugs.

At the third address in Bergbessie Street, police arrested a 20-year-old suspect after he was found to be in possession of 25 units of methamphetamine and 25 mandrax tablets.

Van Wyk said while officers were headed to Delft police station to process the arrested suspects, they noticed a suspicious man in Hawker Street.

He said as soon as the man noticed the police he tried evading them, but was soon apprehended. The officers found eight units of methamphetamine in his jacket pocket.

The 19-year-old suspect was subsequently arrested.

Van Wyk said all the suspects are expected to appear in court once they have been charged.
