Modack charged with Kinnear’s murder
Controversial businessman and alleged underworld kingpin Nafiz Modack has been charged with the murder of top Anti-Gang Unit (AGU) detective Lieutenant-Colonel Charl Kinnear at the Blue Downs Regional Court.
CAPE TOWN, May 14 (ANA) – Controversial businessman and alleged underworld kingpin Nafiz Modack has been charged with the murder of top Anti-Gang Unit (AGU) detective Lieutenant-Colonel Charl Kinnear at the Blue Downs Regional Court on Friday.
Spokesperson for the Directorate for Priority Crime Investigation (Hawks) Lieutenant-Colonel Philani Nkwalase said in a statement that Ricardo Morgan, 36, has also been charged with Kinnear’s murder alongside Modack.
Initially, Zane Killian was the only suspect charged with Kinnear’s murder.
Kinnear was gunned down in front of his Bishop Lavis home in September last year.
Modack appeared alongside five others where a consolidation of charges was listed, including attempted murder of prominent lawyer William Booth, gang-related extortion, kidnapping and intimidation.
“Modack and Morgan were allegedly linked to the police killing, following the arrest of Zane Killian. This now brings the total of three suspects charged for the murder of Lieutenant-Colonel Kinnear,” Nkwalase said.
Modack also faces charges of attempted murder pertaining to Kinnear after it was alleged that he was behind the failed hand grenade attack on Kinnear’s home in November 2019.
Modack has also been charged with corruption alongside AGU Sergeant Ashley Tabisher. It is alleged that Modack offered Tabisher R10,000 (about US$700) in exchange for information about police operations against him.
The State has also set out to prove that Modack conspired with Amaal Jantjies to infiltrate the AGU. Jantjies is also charged in the failed grenade attack.
The State, which had previously opposed bail for Morgan, has changed its decision and he was granted bail of R50,000 (about US$3,500).
The court ordered Morgan to hand over his passport and all travel documents to the investigating officer.
He has also been placed under house arrest.
The matter against the accused has been postponed until Monday, May 17.
