DURBAN, June 1 (ANA) – A 57-year-old man from the KwaZulu-Natal province was left in serious condition on Tuesday morning after being shot at a mosque in Durban.
The victim was in his car parked at the entrance of a mosque in Spencer Road, Reservoir Hills, just west of the Durban central business district, when an unknown suspect shot him, police reports confirm.
Regional spokesperson Captain Nqobile Gwala said that a case of attempted murder has been opened at the Sydenham police station.
“It is alleged that this morning at 10am, a male was stationary at the entrance of the mosque on Spencer Road in Reservoir Hills when he was shot by an unknown suspect. The matter is still under investigation,” Gwala said on Tuesday.
The suspect, who has not been identified, fled in a getaway vehicle, Gwala said.
The victim was taken to hospital for medical attention.
Responding medical teams from a local emergency services company, Emer-G-Med, said that advanced life support measures were needed to stabilise the victim before he could be transported.
“On arrival on scene, a 57-year-old male was found to be seated in his motor vehicle having sustained multiple gunshot wounds from a high-calibre weapon,” Emer-G-Med said in a statement on Tuesday.
Medics also placed the victim onto a stretcher used for spinal cord injuries, indicating the seriousness of his condition.
