Four dead in taxi violence in Cape Town
Additional officers have been deployed along taxi routes to maintain law and order and provide safety to commuters, police said.
CAPE TOWN, July 7 (ANA) – Police are probing taxi violence in Cape Town after four people were murdered and four others injured during separate shootings on Wednesday.
Additional officers have been deployed along taxi routes to maintain law and order and provide safety to commuters, provincial police spokesperson Captain FC van Wyk said in a statement.
The first incident occurred in Ravensmead where a taxi driver was shot by the occupants of another taxi. The victim was transported to a nearby hospital for treatment and Ravensmead police are investigating a case of attempted murder.
In an unrelated incident at about 6.30am, a taxi with occupants was parked at an intersection in Philippi East when another one stopped next to it.
Multiple shots were fired at the stationary vehicle and two men aged 24 and 33 were declared dead on the scene, while two others both aged 35 were transported to a nearby medical facility for treatment, van Wyk said.
Philippi East police have opened two cases of murder and two of attempted murder.
In a third incident, a stationary taxi in Du Noon was accosted by unknown suspects at 7am and a 35-year-old man seated inside the vehicle was later declared dead on the scene by responding medical personnel. Table View police have opened a murder docket.
At about 8.15am, commuters were standing along a road in Samora Machel when unknown occupants in a vehicle fired multiple shots at the crowd before fleeing the scene.
Van Wyk said a 40-year-old man was declared dead on the scene while two other men, aged 39 and 45 sustained gunshot wounds. Samora Machel police are investigating a case of murder and two of attempted murder.
