A family who lost their home and three relatives in a house fire seek assistance in rebuilding their family home after 42 years.
CAPE TOWN, June 18 (ANA) – A family who lost their home and three relatives in a house fire seek assistance in rebuilding their family home after 42 years.
Susan Green, 66, David Green, 42 and 20-year-old Shanique Green died in the fire on Friday, June 4.
At the time of the fire, Jermaine Carelse, spokesperson for the City of Cape Town’s Fire and Rescue Services, the emergency call of a dwelling alight in Geranium Crescent in Protea Park was received at approximately 3.45am.
Carelse said crews from the Atlantis and Melkbosstrand fire stations responded to the scene.
He said upon their arrival, fire crews were confronted with a dwelling alight and endeavoured to remove the occupants from the house.
“Two women and one man were declared deceased on the scene as a result of smoke inhalation.
“A second man was critical and transported to Wesfleur Hospital,” Carelse said.
He said fire crews managed to extinguish the fire at 5.18am and the scene was subsequently handed over to the South African Police Service (SAPS).
Shanique leaves behind her six-month-old daughter.
Susan’s husband, Gordon, managed to survive the fire but remains critical in hospital.
The three relatives were laid to rest on Saturday.
Shanique’s aunt and Susan’s daughter, Lizel Solomons said while the family remain in mourning, they are now trying to piece back the home which holds timeless memories.
Speaking to African News Agency (ANA), Solomons said they seek assistance in reforming the home.
“There is completely nothing left of the house. The walls are still standing but the roof is completely gutted. Everything has burnt. Everything,” Solomons said sadly.
