DURBAN, May 25 (ANA) – A primary school teacher from the Durban township of Chatsworth in KwaZulu-Natal has been released on bail after he was accused of raping a minor last month, several reports said.
A case of rape was opened at the Bayview police station on April 19, KZN regional police spokeswoman Captain Cheryl Pillay said in a statement on Tuesday.
“Investigators arrested the accused on the same day that the case was opened. On April 12, the 29-year old accused appeared in the Chatsworth magistrates court where he was released on bail. The accused will reappear in the Durban regional court on July 5,” Pillay said.
The maths and social science teacher, who allegedly raped a 15-year-old high school pupil, is reportedly on leave and has not been suspended.
The mother of the victim pleaded for privacy and for the law to take its due course.
“My family has been through enough and we do not want this ordeal to torment us any further,” she said in a text message to the Rising Sun.
“I just want to put this behind us for now until we have to go to court.”
The principal of the school where the accused is a teacher was reportedly only made aware of the allegations following a visit by the media on Monday.
“The teacher was still employed at the school and all we know is that he was on sick leave from March 18 to May 3. He is a new teacher at our school and nothing was reported to us. We cannot comment further on this matter. However, we will take it to the (education) department,” the principal said.
