CAPE TOWN, November 24 (ANA) – Cape Town man was arrested on Tuesday morning after he allegedly shot and wounded his wife and son during a family squabble.
The 54-year-old man from Bonteheuwel was arrested by police just after 1am.
According to information obtained, police patrolling in the area saw the lights on at the home in Bonteheuwel Avenue and heard someone screaming.
Upon further inspection, the officer found a young man covered in blood who said he and his mother had been shot by his father.
The officer attached to the Bishop Lavis police station forced his way into the home to ensure the safety and condition of the other victim.
The father was found in the garage on the premises and commanded to surrender himself.
A seven-year-old boy was also present but fortunately had no injuries.
The firearm was recovered and confiscated.
Chairperson of the Bishop Lavis Community Policing Forum (CPF), Graham Lindhorst said it may be that the father snapped.
“Information at hand is that it was a family squabble whereby the father decided to shoot at his wife and the child. Further information was not available.
“It could be he snapped about something. Mental health is a big issue these days especially with Covid-19 that put many people into depression. It could be he snapped about something and took it out on his family,” Lindhorst told African News Agency (ANA).
The man is currently being detained at the Bishop Lavis police station.
Provincial police spokesperson, Sergeant Noloyiso Rwexana confirmed the incident and said the suspect will appear in the Bishop Lavis Magistrate’s Court for attempted murder once charged.
