Kenya Power is set to commission the 66/11KV EPZ substation after repair works, boosting the stability of electricity supply to EPZ industries, Athi River, Kitengela, and its environs.

The repair works involved the replacement of a faulty switchgear, which diminished the substation’s capacity to serve customers in the area.

The commissioning exercise set for September 25, will involve a shutdown of electricity supply to Kitengela and its environs for 8 hours (from 9.00 am to 5.00 pm) to allow for the reconnection of all the customers back to the EPZ substation.

“The commissioning of the EPZ substation underscores our commitment to avail quality and reliable power supply to our customers,” said Kenya Power’s Ag. Managing Director Geoffrey Muli.

To mitigate the loss of revenue and disruption of livelihoods for customers in Kitengela and its environs, following the breakdown of the EPZ substation, the Company has been serving them from the Athi River and Syokimau substations.

“Over the years, we have reinforced the capacity of our network by constructing new substations and distribution lines to facilitate the connection of new customers as well as to create a redundant network. This is important because it provides alternative supply to our customers when one substation fails thus minimizing supply interruptions,” said Muli.

To boost the capacity of the EPZ substation, plans are underway to construct a dual 11kV power line linking the EPZ substation to the Lukenya substation to provide an additional alternative source of power supply.
