ANAPIX:Week in Pictures

1/16: South Africa – Cape Town – 15 September 2022 – Smog fills the air in the early morning around the Sea Point Promenade. If Cape residents have noticed a brown haze appearing in their recent sunset pictures, that might be the result of the periodic air pollution experienced during the winter months in the mother city from vehicle and factory emissions, gardening or crop chemicals and numerous other sources. Areas impacted by poor air quality included Khayelitsha and Wallacedene, where very localised emissions sourced from informal traders, residential wood burning and traffic emission impacts were observed.Exposure to unsafe levels of air pollution was known to cause respiratory illness, ischaemic heart disease, strokes and other serious medical conditions thus all sectors of society had a role to play in combating air pollution.Lucky for us Capetonians, we have the Cape Doctor. The local name for the strong south-eastern wind – also known as South-Easter – that blows from False Bay and funnels through to Cape Town and Blouberg.  It is said to clear all pollution in the city and across the Cape Flats, offering an amazing clear sky and view of the Mother City.Through False Bay the Cape Doctor sweeps over the Peninsula and Cape Flats. Although it is the predominant wind on this south western part of the Western Cape in summer, the South Easter is extra strong along Cape Town’s Cape Flats and Cape Town through the funnel of the Table Mountain range and Hottentots Holland mountains. 2/16: South Africa – Cape Town – 22 September 2022 – Dress rehearsal of Jazzart Dance Theatres latest production at the Artscape Theatre. Three separate works that combine to offer audiences an uplifting, thought provoking and thoroughly enjoyable evening of contemporary dance at its best. Colourful, athletic, technically challenging and marvelling performances, Survive, is Jazzarts tribute to our human ability to triumph over challenge to thrive. Thursday 22 September and will run until Saturday 24 September 2022. Performances will take place at 20H00 each evening, with a matinee performance on 24 September at 15H00. 4/16: South Africa – Durban – 17 September 2022 – Maidens gather at the Enyokeni Royal Palace in Nongoma, KwaZulu-Natal for the 2022 Reed Dance. This is the biggest reed ceremony since the Covid-19 pandemic.This annual ceremony, known as the Mkhosi woMhlanga or the Zulu reed dance, is a centuries-old tradition. 5/16: South Africa Cape Town 21- September-2022- The City together with the Minstrel and Malay Choir organisations hosted a media session on their cultural competitions, New Years Eve and Tweede Nuwe Jaar celebrations. 6/16: South Africa Cape Town 21- September-2022- Babalwa Latsha in tears. Springbok Women squad for Rugby World Cup in NZ named. Nolusindiso Booi will lead the Springbok Women to New Zealand in what will be a third Rugby World Cup for the South African captain and lock, alongside Zenay Jordaan, who also played in the 2010 and 2014 tournaments, while Tayla Kinsey and Asithandile Ntoyanto will play in their second tournaments, having represented South Africa in the 2014 showpiece in England.The remainder of the squad of 32 players selected by head coach Stanley Raubenheimer and announced by SA Rugby President Mr Mark Alexander on Wednesday in Cape Town, will all make their Rugby World Cup debut in New Zealand, where the Springbok Women will face France, Fiji and England in Pool C in October.Photographer Ayanda Ndamane / African News Agency (ANA)

9/16: SOUTH AFRICA – Cape Town – 22 September 2022 – Commercial fire and explosion in Woodstock An explosion from a building at the corner of Plein and Victoria Streets in Woodstock occurred earlier this evening, where a fire broke out. This was followed by several secondary explosions shortly afterwards. City of Cape Town’s Fire & Rescue have responded, with numerous appliances including an aerial appliance in use. 2x jets and 2x BA sets in use. Two injuries have been reported at this stage, with two patients who sustained burn wounds. Metro Rescue, ambulance and Metro structural vehicle on scene. The two adult male patients, condition code red, sustained 70%to100% burn wounds and were taken to Grootte Schuur Hospital. The cause of the explosions are unknown at this stage, this is an active scene. Further details will be released as they become known. 12/16: South Africa – Cape Town – 22 September 2022 – The WCED announced that Pinelands North Primary School in Cape Town has been nominated as a finalist in the Worlds Best School Prize for Overcoming Adversity. T4 Education, in collaboration with Templeton World Charity Foundation, Accenture and American Express, made the global announcement this morning, and Pinelands North Primary School celebrated with a special assembly where they Jigged for Joy. Premier Alan Winde congratulated the school on their nomination, saying: I am elated that two of our schools made the shortlist, and even more thrilled that Pinelands North Primary School made it to the top 3. 13/16: South Africa – Cape Town – 19 September 2022 – Some businesses closed during load shedding in Sea Point Main Road. With no end in sight to Stage 6 load shedding, which was implemented on Sunday, Eskom has applied to energy regulator Nersa to hike tariffs by 32% on April 1 next year. 14/16: South Africa – Cape Town – 20 September 2022 – An activist wears a mask of Minister of Transport, Fikile Mbalula. The youth-led African Climate Alliance and civil society movement Unite Behind held a political action demonstration at the Blue Train Park to protest the collapse of commuter rail services in Cape Town and around the country. The action called for the transformation of the public transport for system change and formed part of their activations for Cape Town Climate Week this week in the lead-up to the March for System Change on Saturday. 15/16: South Africa – Cape Town – 18 September 2022 – The OUTsurance Gun Run brought a weekend of running fun to Cape Town, with a 21.1km Half Marathon, 10km Run/Walk, 15km Trail Run, 5km Fun Run/Walk and a 5km Pet Walk along the Atlantic Seaboard. The finish venue was at the Green Point Common, opposite the Green Point Cricket Club. The venue hosted space for families to picnic, food stalls and a kiddies play area. 16/16: South Africa – Cape Town – 13 September 2022 – Minister Anton Bredell visited Stony Point Nature Reserve, outside Bettys Bay, on Tuesday the 13th of September. The visit highlighted the important contribution CapeNature makes to eco-tourism in the Western Cape as part of its conservation mandate. Minister Bredell also highlighted Access Week, from the 20th to the 27th of September, when CapeNatures reserves can be visited free of charge. September also marks Heritage Month in South Africa and Stony Point is situated on the site of the historic Waaygat Whaling Station. Today it is home to a colony of the endangered African penguin.
