6/17: South Africa Kempton Park SA Fuel shortage. 09 May 2022. Following the disaster that took place in KZN with the floods the fuel supply line has been damage and so has rail lines from that region. ACSA held a press conference to address this issue. They are currently on 3.5 days of fuel remaining at O.R. Tambo. (normally running on 5 days) They are running on alternative emergency supply which is made possible through the Central Energy Fund. CEO of ACSA Mpumi Mpofu explains how the restoration of infrastructure is paramount. The panel says that Jet fuel is stable but supply and demand is not matched. 7/17: South Africa – Cape Town – 18 May 2022 – The maritime component of the SA National Defence Force (SANDF), will take the first of three multi-mission inshore patrol vessels (MMIPVs) into service as part of rejuvenating the patrol capability of the SA Navy (SAN). Chief of the SA Navy, Vice Admiral Mosiwa Hlongwane, will accept SAS Sekhukhune (P1571), the first of three Warrior Class MMIPVs, at the Simons Town naval dockyard. The MMIPVs continue the Warrior Class the SAN created with the refurbished strike craft SAS Isaac Dyobha (P1565), SAS Makhanda (P1569) and the now decommissioned to reserve status SAS Galeshewe (P1567). 8/17: South Africa – Cape Town – 18 May 2022 – Simon’s Town (Afrikaans: Simonstad), is a town near Cape Town and home to the South African Navy. It is located on the shores of False Bay, on the eastern side of the Cape Peninsula. It has been a naval base for more than two centuries (first for the Royal Navy and now the South African Navy). The town is named after Simon van der Stel, an early governor of the Cape Colony. The South African Navy (SA Navy) is the naval warfare branch of the South African National Defence Force. The Navy is primarily engaged in maintaining a conventional military deterrent, participating in counter-piracy operations, fishery protection, search and rescue, and upholding maritime law enforcement for the benefit of South Africa and its international partners. . 9/17: South Africa – Cape Town – 16 May 2022 – The Total Lunar Eclipse of 2022 made its mark over The Mother City on Monday morning. When a lunar eclipse occurs, the moon will typically take on a reddish hue, giving it the nickname the blood moon. A lunar eclipse is visible when the Sun, Earth, and Moon align so that the Moon passes into Earths shadow. 10/17: South Africa – Cape Town – 15 May 2022 – The Cape of Good Hope Trail is an overnight, 34 kilometer long hiking trail that starts at the Cape of Good Hope Nature Reserve entrance gate and loops around the best viewpoints the reserve has to offer. This hike is only recommended for people with moderate to advanced levels of fitness. While the route is not particularly technical, the distance covered is significant, and hikers must be prepared to cover up to 15 kilometres per day. This hike offers hikers fragrant fynbos trails, secluded beaches, and overnight accommodation at Rooikrans in one of three cottages each of which sleeps six. Cutlery and crockery are provided but you need to bring your own bedding. Bookings are essential and must be done via the Buffelsfontein Visitor Centre on 021 780 9204 during office hours. The current price is R355 per person, which does not include entrance fees into the Cape of Good Hope Nature reserve. For more info, visit the trail information page on the SANParks website.
