1/20: South Africa – Cape Town – 14 November 2022 – Extinction Rebellion (XR) Cape Town staged a piece of street theatre at the Glencairn Tidal Pool for COP27’s ‘Water Day’ today to highlight that the “fossil fuel business as usual” mindset of the wealthy minority of the world’s countries is leading to climate disasters, such as the sea level rise which is today’s topic at COP 27. This comes after the 2022 provisional State of the Global Climate report which found that the past eight years are on track to be the eight warmest on record resulting in extreme heat waves, drought, and devastating flooding. 2/20: South Africa – Cape Town – 16 November 2022 – Shirley Gunn gave her testimony about being detained by the security police at the Cape High Court in the Imam Haron Inquest. Shirley Gunn is a South African former anti-apartheid activist and Umkhonto we Sizwe member who was falsely accused of the Khotso House bombings in 1998. The inquiry into the late struggle activists cause of death has entered its second week and is set to wrap up on Friday. Imam Haron was identified as a security risk and arrested in May 1969. 18/20: SOUTH AFRICA – Cape Town – 11 November 2022 – Extinction Rebellion Cape Town staged a short piece of street theatre in Long Street to highlight the climate crisis we are facing and to coincide with the COP27 Decarbonization Day held in Egypt today. Extinction Rebellion Cape Town is calling on the South African government, and the governments of the world, to stop looking to unicorn technology to magically save us, but rather to invest in current and effective technology in the form of renewable energy, which according to them is now cheaper, cleaner, safer and more people-centred than fossil fuels.
