South Africa – Cape Town – 13 May 2021 – One hundred and seventy nine pots of Aknie are prepared at the Callies Rugby Grounds in Rylands. Nakhlistan aims to cook 179 x 130lt pots of Aknie to feed over 90 000 on Eid-ul-Fitr. Nakhlistan has become a household name, synonymous with caring for the needy and cooking huge pots of food for distribution amongst the less fortunate. Nakhlistan was founded 37 years ago by a group of friends, who saw the need within the community to cook food on the eve of Eid-ul-Fitr in 1984. After 29 or 30 days of Fasting, Muslim celebrate Eid-ul-Fitr. These friends realised that many of the needy did not have food on this day of Celebration. They then decided to cook two pots of food for distribution to the needy on that day of Eid-ul-Fitr. 1984 was year 1 that Nakhlistan cooked food and 2021 will be year 38.
