A group of 40 very vulnerable, abused, and poor women who live on Middelpos and surrounding farms maintained the 10 400 olive trees for 5 years. The women turned dead vines into wood bundles which they sold to households in Cape Town. In 2018, the Western Cape Department of Agriculture donated 6ha of vegetables which the women farmed organically and sold to retailers, informal traders, and households in Cape Town. The women used surplus vegetables to make jam and pickled jars that were sold to help pay for the increasing electricity and petrol costs of the farm. The income generated helped to pay for the operating costs and to maintain the olives on Middelpos farm. On Saturday, 17 April 2021 the women harvested their first olives from the trees planted in 2016. They invited families from Cape Town to come and help them and many responded positively to their call.
