13/18: South Africa – Cape Town – 04 February 2021 – Rooibos tea being processed at Carmien Tea near Clanwilliam. The Western Cape Government welcomes the announcement that the European Commission has approved the registration of the designation ‘Rooibos’/’Red Bush’ in its Register of Protected Designations of Origin and Protected Geographical Indications. According to a statement released by the EU Delegation to South Africa, Rooibos / Red Bush is the first African food to receive the status of a protected designation of origin in the EU register. Product names registered as protected designations of origin have strong links to their origin since every production, processing, and preparation aspect must take place in that specific origin using recognised know-how. In contrast, a product protected as a protected geographical indication requires that at least one of the stages of production, processing or preparation takes place in the place of origin. The recognition by the European Commission of the ‘Rooibos’/’Red Bush’ Product of Origin was published in the Official Journal of the European Union on 31 May 2021. According to the South African Rooibos Council, the Rooibos industry provides income and employment to approximately 8 000 agri workers. In addition, other jobs are created in upstream activities such as processing, packaging, retailing etc.Picture Henk Kruger/African News Agency(ANA)
14/18: South Africa – Cape Town – 7 June 2021 – Turtle Rehabilitation Programme launches at the V&A Aquarium for World Oceans Day. On 6 November 2014, Lieze Swart of Oceans and Coasts found an injured, sub-adult green turtle on a beach in the De Hoop Nature Reserve, about four hours drive from Cape Town. The injured animal was brought to the Aquarium by Darrell Anders from the Department of Environmental Affairs, and what followed was an intensive period of rehabilitation. On arrival, the turtle weighed 16.6kg, had severe bruising and a possible fracture of the bottom shell (or plastron), with loss of scales and exposed bone. It was also positively buoyant (or floating), a condition which can occur owing to a number of reasons. They named him Bob because he bobbed around in his tank. Amazingly Bob has healed so well that you can hardly see where the fracture site was and Bob’s eyesight is also gradually returning. Incredibly the turtle now feeds by itself and weighs a wonderful 18.8kg. The primary aim is to release Bob, but this will only be determined at a much later stage and will be dependent on Bob’s health and eyesight. Photographer: Armand Hough/African News Agency(ANA)
