JOHANNESBURG, April 20 (ANA) – Egypt is set to complete the world’s largest textile factory by March 2022 in the city of El-Mahalla.

According to Fibre2Fashion News, the factory will be over 62,000 square metres in size and boast a daily production capacity of 30 tons.

The plans for the factory were announced in September 2019.

Fibre2Fashion News reported on Tuesday that Prime Minister Mostafa Madbouli held a meeting last week about the factory with the ministers of trade and public enterprise.

Madbouli has also called for granting farmers incentives to grow high-quality cotton to feed local factories.

El Mahalla El Kubra, commonly known as El Maalla, is the largest city in the Gharbia governorate and the Nile Delta.

Five trainers will train 130 others, who in turn will train the workers at other state-owned companies that are being developed in Cairo, Beheira’s Kafr Al Dawar and other areas in the Nile Delta region.

Egypt is also planning a textiles city in the Free Zones System in the Minya region.

The city will be built over 306 feddans, an Egyptian unit of area equal to 1.038 acres.

A company will be established to manage the city and all parties will have equal shares in it.

The project will provide around 17,000 direct jobs in addition to indirect job opportunities and will target exports to overseas markets, according to Fibre2Fashion News.

Last month, Just-Style reported that the North African country was planning to attract foreign investment to the garment and textile sector, which has been harshly affected by the Covid-19 pandemic.

The website also stated that the government’s vision was to target US$17.5 billion by 2025.

The textile and apparel industry is the second-largest sector and plays a major role in shaping the Egyptian economy, according to the Kohan Textile Journal.
