Zimbabwe Plans To Use Nuclear Energy To Alleviate Power Woes

The government of Zimbabwe has announced that it is working on plans which may see it using nuclear energy as an alternative source of energy. The country is also exploring the feasibility of constructing a centre for nuclear science and technology.

This was revealed by Information, Publicity and Broadcasting Services Minister Monica Mutsvangwa during a post-cabinet briefing on Tuesday.

Zimbabwe has uranium deposits that lie mainly in the Zambezi river valley in the northern part of the country.

This is not the first time, however, that Zimbabwe has considered using nuclear power. Former President Robert Mugabe announced plans to use nuclear power several times.

He is reported to have announced plans to acquire a nuclear reactor from Argentina in the 1990s. In 2005, he was quoted by national broadcaster ZBC as saying the country planned to process uranium in order to resolve its power issues.

South Africa is the only African nation with an operational nuclear power plant. The project began in 1984 with the Koeberg Power Station which has two reactors. The plant is owned by the electricity utility Eskom and accounts for 5% of the annual electricity.
