Zimbabwe’s Minister of ICT, Tatenda Mavetera, has taken to social media to issue a press statement after the public called for tariff adjustments by Telecommunication companies to be reviewed.

Companies recently increased their tariffs in local currency by double the amounts before with a nod from POTRAZ. USD tariffs remained the same amid these changes.

This caused a public outcry, and the public asked the Minister of ICT to look into the increased tariffs.

Hon. Tatenda Mavetera assured Zimbabweans that the ministry was working hand in hand with POTRAZ to address the situation. POTRAZ had said that the tariff increase was to support the telecommunication sector during economic hardships experienced by the country.

Taking to X, the minister shared a Press Statement in conjunction with POTRAZ, where they explained the recent tariff increase. In the press statement, they pointed out that the growth was triggered by the depreciation of the ZWL against the USD from December 2022 to June 2023.

POTRAZ also warns the public to report any service provider that hikes USD prices as it will be unlawful. Only the local currency has lost its value against the USD by 200%, according to the Press Statement.

Therefore, the regulatory board had to increase the tariffs as a way of balancing out operator viability and service affordability. With the increase in costs of staff cost and other expenses like stationery, the board saw it necessary for tariffs also to increase.
