Three Ugandan students died after a truck lost control, rammed into a school premise and crashed into a classroom.

About 18 other pupils were injured in the shocking incident at Kasaka Secondary School in Gomba, 130 km from the Ugandan capital, Kampala, on Tuesday at around 3.30 pm.

Gomba District Police Commander Christopher Ruhunde confirmed the accident, stating that the driver of the Sinotruk lorry lost control of the construction vehicle because there was heavy rain, and he stormed into the school through the fence before smashing the school’s computer laboratory where students were in the midst of a lesson, Anadolu Agency reports.

The Kasaka Secondary School head teacher, Kefasi Katumba, recounted the incident to Africa News, revealing that the 26-year-old truck driver, Wanume Abudala, first ran down the school gate before ramming into the computer lab and Senior Four West classroom.

“The driver seems to have failed to negotiate the corner and thought the truck will stop if he hits the school gate. Unfortunately, it just continued moving, crashing into the computer lab where it killed two students on the spot and injured several others.”

Three students died on the spot. Ugandan Traffic Police Spokesperson ASP Faridah Nampiima said the 18 pupils injured in the unfortunate accident were immediately taken to a nearby hospital for medical attention.

In pictures and a video making rounds on social media, the construction truck can be seen with almost half of its body forced into the classroom. The lorry’s immense impact destroyed a portion of the building wall and the roof.

The driver of the lorry was apprehended by the police to help with the investigations.
