Three Nabbed For Supplying Fake Covid-19 Vaccination Certificates

Police have nabbed three suspects on allegations of operating a ring selling fake Covid-19 vaccination certificates at Seke South Clinic in Chitungwiza.

The three arrested yesterday are the pest controller at the clinic, Sekai Gabriel, who was the first to be picked up after police asked the public for help tracking her down, along with nurse Shorai Sithori and the suspected outside agent Lloyd Chidziva, who is alleged to be the person who found customers prepared to pay US$25 to US$50 for the fake cards and brought them to the clinic.

Last night national police spokesperson Assistant Commissioner Paul Nyathi confirmed the arrest and said the suspects will appear in court soon.

The publication of an investigative report by The Herald revealed that people were allegedly paying between US$25 and US$50 to be issued with forged cards in Chitungwiza without being vaccinated triggered the action by the police and the Special Anti-Corruption Unit.

The publication also reports that cross-border traders are the main customers since they are yet to be given priority for vaccinations but reckon the vaccination card will help them.

The Zimbabwean government will start issuing Covid-19 certificates to people who have received their second dose as a way to verify who has been vaccinated.

The certificate will come in the form of an electronic card with security features and a quick response (QR) barcode which can be scanned for verification. It will be linked to the person’s passport and national identity document.

The Covid-19 certificate comes a few weeks after Zimbabwe’s President Emmerson Mnangagwa said the country might consider mandatory Covid-19 vaccinations and those who refuse risked losing out on employment opportunities and social services like public transport.
