Tables Have Turned: South African Man Arrested For Armed Robbery In Zimbabwe. A South African man was arrested in Zimbabwe for armed robbery together with four of his accomplices. The robbers also got away with US $120 and cellphones from Mutora Pharmacy located at the same business centre.

A South African man was arrested in Zimbabwe for armed robbery together with four of his accomplices.

The South African national and his four accomplices are believed to be part of a nine-member gang that descended on a Mukuru outlet in Gokwe and got away with cash. They reportedly got away with US$2,500 (approx R44 000)and ZWL$20 500 from the Mukuru outlet at Nembudziya Business Centre. The robbers also got away with US$120 and cellphones from Mutora Pharmacy located at the same business centre.

The South African man who has been identified as Viwe Mashiyi (33) appeared before a Gokwe magistrate facing robbery charges. His four accomplices Alpha Hove (20), Maxwell Moyo (25), Shepherd Chapanda (20) all from Kadoma and Aaron Mavhengere from Gokwe North all appeared before the same magistrate facing the same charges.

Mashiyi also known as Lwazi was arrested by police detectives with the assistance of members of the public. The five were arrested while four members of their gang managed to evade arrest during the shootout with police detectives.

The court heard that Viwe Mashiyi and his accomplices pounced on the Mukuru outlet on 30 August this year at around 4PM. They were armed with pistols, knives and catapults among other weapons.

One of the gang members then produced a pistol and pointed it at the person manning the outlet who has been identified as Phineas Nisbet Sibanda. The gang member demanded cash before one of the armed robbers drew a knife and stabbed Sibanda before escaping with the cash and mobile phone devices.

Upon realising that police officers were parked outside and monitoring them, the robbers opened fire injuring one of the police officers. As others were exchanging fire with police officers, one of the armed robbers proceeded to Mutora Pharmacy. The robber who had a pistol pointed the firearm at one Doctor Mutero and demanded cash and cellphones.

Some of the armed robbers sped off in a getaway vehicle during the melee while the five including the South African national were apprehended by police detectives with assistance from members of the public.
