Sangoma Sjamboks Mentally Challenged Patient To Death For Refusing To Take Medication
A sangoma from Chisumbanje is alleged to have sjamboked a mentally challenged patient to death after she refused to take the prescribed medication she wanted to administer to her.
Esther Masoja (65) of Konjana Village, Chisumbanje, was arrested and charged with the murder of Shaleen Chibhememe (27). Masoja allegedly whipped Shaleen with a sjambok as a way of coercing her to take the medication.
Masoja was not asked to plead when she appeared before Chipinge magistrate, Franklin Mkwanazi, Manica Post reports.
It is in the States case that on February 29, 2021, the victim’s father Simba Chibhememe took his mentally challenged daughter Shaleen to Masoja for treatment.
Masoja advised Chibhememe to leave Shaleen in her custody as she wanted to monitor her. However, Shaleen refused to take the prescribed medicine.
The court heard that Masoja allegedly whipped Shaleen all over the body, arguing that it was part of the healing process.
Shaleen reportedly sustained wounds all over her body due to the whipping. Her mother, Juliet Chibhememe, visited the traditional healer’s place to monitor her daughter’s progress and was shocked to see her daughter all wounded up.
Chibhememe took her daughter to St Peter’s Mission Hospital on March 4, where she was admitted. Sadly Shaleen died on March 8.
A post mortem revealed that the wounds that she sustained when she was whipped had caused her death.
Shaleen’s parents reported the matter to the police, leading to Masoja’s arrest.
Meanwhile, Masoja was granted $10 000 bail and remanded out of custody to April 22 for routine remand.
