Former Paralympian Oscar Pistorius’s bid for freedom has been rejected.

Oscar Pistorius who shot and killed his girlfriend, Reeva Steenkamp, on Valentine’s Day in 2013 has been denied parole today.

Initially, he was found guilty of culpable homicide, but on appeal by the prosecutor, he was convicted of murder in 2014 on the grounds that he must have known his actions – shooting three times through a locked bathroom door in his Pretoria home – would lead to the death of whoever was on the other side.

After serving 8 years of a 13 and five-month prison sentence, the six-time Paralympic gold medallist appealed for early release.

The Parole board, however, rejected Oscar Pistorius’s parole application on the basis that he had not served a “minimum detention period.”

News24 reports that Oscar Pistorius will be given another chance to apply for parole after 1 year.

Oscar Pistorius’ parole bid sparked a public outcry on social media as critics did not want him to be released from prison just yet. Critics argued that Oscar Pistorius doesn’t deserve to be released on parole as he murdered his girlfriend in cold and showed no remorse afterwards. Tweeps want him to serve his full sentence without any possibility of parole.

@Roger

13 years is low enough for murdering somebody. He must do the whole 13 years. Coward. He killed her out of anger and jealousy. It’s fine I don’t mind paying my taxes to keep him there.

@ApheleleJody;

If Oscar Pistorius gets released on parole after he cruelly murdered his girlfriend, Reeva Steenkamp will just show how our country doesn’t care about GBV

Why release a murderer ?? To kill again ???

@thee_adv;

Oscar Pistorius should never be given parole. What he did to Reeva Steenkamp was brutal, and he failed to tell the court the real story of that fateful day.

I don’t buy the story of thinking it was an intruder, and the SCA also states this in the appeal judgment.
