ICC Bans Former Zimbabwe Captain Heath Streak From Cricket Over Corruption

Former Zimbabwe captain Heath Streak has been given an eight-year ban for five breaches of the International Cricket Council’s anti-corruption code.

The breaches took place during Streak’s role as coach of Zimbabwe and various domestic teams, the ICC said in a statement on Wednesday.

The games include international cricket as well as matches in Twenty20 leagues in India, Pakistan, Afghanistan, and Bangladesh.

In the statement, Alex Marshall, general manager of the ICC integrity unit said as a former captain and coach, he held a position of trust and owed a duty to uphold the integrity of the game.

He also said Streak breached the code on several occasions, including facilitating the approach of four other players.

Marshall also said the offenses did not affect the outcomes of any relevant matches and Streak has agreed to assist the ICC anti-corruption education program.

Streak expressed his remorse and contrition and entered this agreed sanction decision to avoid the need for a full disciplinary process.

The ICC found that Streak engaged with an Indian man known as ‘Mr. X’ during his time coaching Zimbabwe and in Twenty20 leagues across Asia.

Streak passed on information on matches and contact details of players, including one national team captain. In return, he received two Bitcoins and an iPhone for his wife.

The ICC also said Streak attempted to disrupt its investigation by colluding with Mr. X – who had also been interviewed – and deleting phone messages.
