Fatal Road Accident Claims the Lives of Zimbabwean Passengers on South African Highway

A fatal road accident has claimed the lives of eight people, believed to be Zimbabwean nationals, on a South African highway. The incident occurred in the early hours of the morning on 1 April 2023, near Musina town, along the N1 highway, before the Baobab Tollgate.

The Chronicle reports that according to Ms Tidimalo Chuene, the spokesperson for Limpopo’s Traffic and Community Safety, the accident occurred when a Toyota Quantum, in which the passengers were travelling, collided with a delivery van. The driver of the minibus taxi had made an overtaking error, causing the head-on collision with the light delivery vehicle.

“Indications are that the accident happened when a minibus taxi overtook unsafely on a barrier line and collided head-on with a light delivery vehicle,” Ms Chuene said in a statement.

Tragically, the accident claimed the lives of five men and three women, while eight other passengers sustained injuries and were transported to nearby health facilities for medical attention.

The road where the accident occurred was temporarily closed to allow emergency services to attend to the scene. Motorists were advised to use alternative routes or exercise patience if unable to change their planned route.

The exact details of the passengers and the minibus taxi involved in the accident are still unclear at this stage.

In the wake of this tragedy, the Limpopo’s Traffic and Community Safety urged all road users to exercise caution on the roads at all times.

“Our deepest condolences go out to the families and loved ones of those who lost their lives in this tragic accident. We urge all road users to be vigilant and cautious when driving, particularly during the early morning hours,” Ms Chuene said.

This is a devastating loss of life, and we can only hope that the families of the deceased find some comfort and strength during this difficult time.
